Unidentified gunmen fired shots at the house of a businessman in Chattogram’s Hathazari on Wednesday, August 20, for not paying Tk 50 lakh in ‘extortion’.
Locals said a group of six unidentified youths on a motorcycle fired a few rounds of bullets at the house of businessman Muhammad Jahangir Alam in North Mekhal village under Mekhal union in the upazila around 11:00am.
No one was at the home during the attack as all the family members reside in Chattogram city, according to locals.
Police said they found a bullet and nine empty casings abandoned on the ground floor and two marks of bullet on the veranda of the second floor.
Quoting businessman Jahangir, Hathazari circle’s assistant superintendent (ASP) Quazi Md Tareque Aziz told Jago News that Tk 50 lakh extortion was demanded to him from a WhatsApp number 15 days ago when he did not take it seriously.
The businessman assumes the gunmen fired shots at his home today for not giving them extortion, OC Tareque quoted him as saying.
Police collected CCTV footages of the incident and began investigation, the OC added.
