175 Bangladeshis repatriated from Libya’s detention centre

A total of 175 Bangladeshis have been repatriated from the Ganfouda Detention Centre in Benghazi, Libya. They arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday (21 August) around 6:15 am on a Burak Airlines flight.

Al Amin Nayon, Manager of BRAC’s Migration Program, told Jago News that some formalities are still underway for the returnees, and they will be allowed to leave once all procedures are completed.

Officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) welcomed the returnees at the airport.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the repatriation was carried out with the assistance of the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and the IOM.

Most of the returnees had entered Libya illegally with the encouragement or facilitation of human traffickers, intending to travel to Europe by sea. Many were reportedly kidnapped or subjected to abuse at various times while in Libya.
