EC files GD after BNP-NCP scuffle at boundary hearing

The Election Commission (EC) has filed a General Diary (GD) at Sher-e-Bangla Police Station in Dhaka following a scuffle between leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the National Citizen Party (NCP) during a hearing on the proposed boundaries of Brahmanbaria-2 and -3 constituencies.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the development on Tuesday, August 26.

He said the GD was filed regarding the incident, though no names were mentioned. The EC informed the police about the scuffle that took place during the hearing.

The senior secretary added that the GD was filed on the EC’s own initiative, not in response to any application. The matter has now been referred to the police, who will handle the investigation.

The scuffle occurred on August 24 at the Election Commission building in Dhaka during the hearing on the draft boundaries of Brahmanbaria-2 and -3 constituencies.

Sources said the hearing was convened to address claims and objections regarding the proposed boundaries. Tensions escalated between the two sides at one point, leading to a scuffle. EC officials intervened to control the situation. The hearing for Brahmanbaria-2 and -3 was subsequently concluded by the EC secretary, who asked the parties to leave the room.
