President inquires about Nur’s condition; assures treatment, justice

President Mohammed Shahabuddin inquired about the health of Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, on Sunday morning (31 August) at 10:07 am. The President assured that the government is arranging advanced medical treatment for Nur abroad.

Expressing deep sorrow and strong condemnation over the attack on the former DUCSU vice president, the President also promised that exemplary punishment would be ensured for those involved in the assault.

The statement was released by Abu Hanif, senior council member and media coordinator of the organization.

The incident occurred late Friday night in Bijoynagar, Dhaka, during clashes between Gono Odhikar Parishad and Jatiya Party activists. At least 50 people, including Nur and general secretary Muhammad Rashed Khan, were injured when law enforcement personnel used batons to disperse the groups. Due to the severity of his injuries, Nur was initially admitted to Islami Bank Hospital and later transferred to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 11:00 pm on doctors’ advice.

Dr. Mostak Ahmed, resident doctor at DMCH emergency department, said on Saturday that Nur suffered fractures to his nose and jaw, as well as brain hemorrhage. Blood clots were also found in his eyes. A medical board comprising senior doctors from neurosurgery, ENT, and ICU departments has been formed to monitor his condition. Another CT scan will be conducted to determine whether the brain hemorrhage has worsened or improved.
