Yunus orders immediate overseas treatment for Nur

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has ordered the immediate transfer of Nurul Haque Nur, President of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and former Vice President of DUCSU, abroad for advanced medical treatment following a brutal assault.

The directive came during a meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday (September 2), where Nur’s wife, Maria Akhter, along with senior leaders of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, including General Secretary Rashed Khan and Senior Joint General Secretary Hasan Al Mamun, appealed to the Chief Adviser for urgent intervention.

Visibly emotional, Maria Akhter broke down as she described Nur’s critical condition, revealing he had suffered a brain hemorrhage, broken nose, jaw fractures, and spinal injuries during the attack. “He needs specialized care unavailable here. Please send him abroad,” she pleaded.

In response, Dr. Yunus directed the Ministry of Health to arrange Nur’s overseas treatment immediately. “We are all shocked by this incident,” the Chief Adviser said. “Every possible measure is being taken for his proper care. A judicial investigation is already underway.”

The meeting was also attended by key advisers, including Law Adviser Asif Nazrul, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan.

Asif Nazrul confirmed that a one-member judicial inquiry committee, led by Justice Ali Reza, is being formed to investigate the attack. The official gazette will be published by Wednesday, and the probe is expected to conclude within 15 days.

The violence erupted on Friday evening in Kakrail, Dhaka, when a procession organized by the People's Rights Council passed near the Jatiya Party’s central office.

Clashes broke out between activists of rival groups, after which armed personnel and police allegedly joined in, beating Nur and others with batons outside the council’s office. Nur sustained severe injuries and was hospitalised in critical condition.
