Md. Harun or Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of the police station, confirmed the death to Jago News on Thursday.
Mohammad Zahidul Hasan, Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) and Acting Commissioner of GMP, stated that around 2:00 pm on the day, local residents—including Sohel, Nur Islam, and Roni Mia’s wife—brought him to the police station from Fakir Market in the Boro Dewra area of Tongi.
They alleged that Roni Mia had stolen a submersible pump and some pipes from an unknown location. However, he could not provide any information regarding the matter.
According to locals, Roni Mia had long been involved in criminal activities, including theft, and was addicted to drugs. His actions had caused significant resentment in the community.
Based on the allegations, police kept him in custody at the station. Around 6:00 pm, Roni Mia fell ill in the police station’s bathroom. Police immediately took him to Shaheed Ahsanullah Master General Hospital, which referred him to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. He passed away there at 8:30 pm while undergoing treatment.
