Protesters attacked the upazila parishad and a police station in Bhanga, Faridpur, over the reorganization of parliamentary seats. The incident occurred around 1:00 pm on Monday (15 September).
Meanwhile, traffic on the Faridpur-Barishal and Dhaka-Khulna highways has been suspended, and the entire area remains tense.
According to sources, thousands of protesters stormed the Upazila Parishad, vandalised government offices, and set them on fire. They also attacked the police station, damaging at least three police vehicles and several other vehicles, including motorcycles. Fire services later arrived at the scene and brought the fires under control.
Attempts to reach Bhanga police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Ashraf Hossain, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to multiple calls.
Confirming the incident, Bhanga Highway Police OC Rokibuzzaman told Jago News that the situation had been normal since the morning. “Suddenly, thousands of angry people attacked the Upazila Parishad and the police station, vandalizing property and setting fires. Detailed information will be provided later,” he said.
Notably, the Election Commission recently issued a gazette notification on the reorganization of national parliamentary seats, which merged the Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga into Faridpur-2 from Faridpur-4. Since the publication of the gazette, locals have been blocking highways and railways for five days in protest, disrupting traffic on the Dhaka-Khulna and Faridpur-Barishal highways and affecting 21 districts in the southwestern region.
