HC questions exclusion of two unions from Faridpur-4

The High Court has issued a rule asking the Election Commission (EC) to explain why the gazette notification excluding two unions from Faridpur-4 constituency and adding these to Faridpur-2 should not be declared illegal.

The bench of Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Bishwajit Debnath issued the rule on Tuesday, September 16, after a primary hearing of a writ petition in this regard.

The HC asked the Election Commission to respond to this rule within the next 10 days, said Barrister Humayun Kabir Pallab, who moved for the petitioner in the court.

The Election Commission published a gazette recently which redrew boundaries for 46 parliamentary constituencies ahead of the upcoming national election.

According to the gazette, Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazila, previously under Faridpur-4, have been attached to Nagar Kanda upazila under Faridpur-2.

Following the demarcation, residents in Bhanga upazila staged protests, including highway and railway blockade, that turned violent on Monday.
