The interim government of Bangladesh has issued a strong condemnation following the violent assault on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders Akhter Hossen and Tasnim Zara in New York on Monday.
The government alleged that the attack was orchestrated by supporters and affiliates of the ousted former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.
Calling the assault “politically motivated and targeted,” the Interim Government said the incident underscored the violent legacy of Hasina’s regime, which it described as one built on “toxic and intolerant politics.”
“This reprehensible act is a stark and painful reminder of the political culture of intimidation and violence that flourished under Sheikh Hasina’s rule. The Interim Government is determined to break this cycle and build a more peaceful, democratic, and inclusive Bangladesh,” the statement read.
Airport security failure cited
The incident took place amid heightened security concerns during the Chief Adviser’s US visit. According to officials, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had arranged a VVIP-level security plan, ensuring a special exit and secure transport from John F Kennedy International Airport.
However, last-minute complications linked to visa clearance forced the delegation to reroute through an alternative exit. Despite repeated high-level requests from Dhaka for VVIP access and protection, US airport authorities reportedly denied the request.
“This lapse in facilitation inadvertently exposed members of the delegation to serious risk,” the government noted.
NYPD action and arrest
Following the attack, Bangladesh’s Mission in New York immediately contacted the New York Police Department. Authorities confirmed that one individual involved in the assault has already been apprehended, while a broader investigation is ongoing.
The interim government said it remains in continuous coordination with both federal and local law enforcement in the US to ensure justice and accountability.
Security reinforced for delegation
In response to the assault, security for the Chief Adviser and the official delegation has been significantly reinforced. US agencies are now working closely with Bangladeshi authorities to prevent any repeat of such incidents.
Strong warning against political violence
The government reiterated its firm stance that political violence and intimidation, whether inside Bangladesh or abroad, will not be tolerated.
“Any attempt to export toxic politics beyond our borders will face legal and diplomatic consequences. We stand committed to upholding democratic values and the rule of law at all costs,” the statement concluded.
