Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, reiterated that the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, will return to the country within a few weeks.
He made the statement on Thursday (September 25) while delivering a speech as the chief guest at a programme paying tribute at the grave of former President and party founder Ziaur Rahman. The programme was organized by the Central Council of the Diploma Pharmacist Association of Bangladesh (D-FAB) on the occasion of World Pharmacist Day. BNP Media Cell chief Dr Maudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel attended the event as a special guest.
Dr Zahid said, “The BNP’s acting chairman is not only the leader of the BNP but also the leader of all those involved in the movement to restore democracy. I mentioned a few days ago, and you will see that within a few weeks, InshaAllah, Tarique Rahman will return and lead not only the BNP’s electoral process but also the final phase of the movement to restore democracy.”
Regarding party nominations, he added, “Local and district leaders are responsible for deciding who will be candidates. Based on the party’s surveys and, above all, the people’s support, you will see those individuals shining in their respective areas. However, in recent times, speculative news has appeared on social media and in newspapers. As our party spokesperson Rizvi Ahmed clearly stated two days ago, the party has not given anyone a green or red signal. Nevertheless, the electoral process, being a continuous activity, will continue.”
Responding to a question about the Awami League, Dr Zahid said, “The history of this party and its leaders has never been in favor of the people. They believe in politics driven by vengeance.”
