The United States and the United Kingdom have announced fresh aid commitments totaling US$ 96 million at the first-ever High-Level Conference on the Rohingya and other Myanmar minorities held at the UN headquarters on Tuesday. Of the total, the US pledged US$ 60 million, while the UK committed US$ 36 million.
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, who is accompanying Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, disclosed the information in a Facebook post at 2:04 am on Wednesday (Bangladesh local time).
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser urged the international community to adopt a seven-point global strategy, including a realistic roadmap for the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas, to end the protracted crisis. He warned that time is running out both for the displaced community and for the countries hosting them.
Speaking at the high-level conference on “The Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar” at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, September 30, Yunus said the world must move beyond expressions of solidarity and act decisively.
