BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, has stated that he wants Bangladesh’s rightful share of water from India. He emphasised that he does not want to see another Felani hanging at the border.
He made the remarks in an extensive interview with BBC Bangla. The news outlet published the second part of the interview on its website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel on Tuesday morning.
When asked about how Bangladesh’s relations with India should be, Tarique Rahman said, “Of course, I want my share of the water. Of course, I do not want to see another Felani hanging. Of course, we will not accept this.”
Asked whether BNP would remain vocal about Bangladesh’s interests regarding water sharing and border killings, Tarique explained, “I gave you two examples to explain what our stance will be. We want our share of water—that is, my country’s share, the people’s share. I want accountability. The reference to the Felani killing was to show that if harm comes to my people, I will never accept it.”
Regarding Sheikh Hasina’s shelter in India and how relations with India would be if BNP came to power, the BNP leader said, “If they provide refuge to a dictator there and make the people of Bangladesh resentful, then there is nothing we can do about it. The people of Bangladesh have decided that their relationship with them will remain distant. So, I have to stand with the people of my country.”
