ICT launches probe into AL as political party

The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has formally launched an investigation against the Awami League as a political party, appointing an investigation officer to lead the process.

Chief Prosecutor of the tribunal, Tajul Islam, confirmed the development on Tuesday (October 7). Speaking to reporters, he said that if the names of other parties surface during the investigation, action will also be taken against them.

Earlier, on October 5, the Chief Prosecutor had announced that an investigation into the Awami League as a political party would begin within the week. Following that announcement, an investigation officer has now been appointed.

The move follows a complaint filed on October 2 last year by Bobby Hajjaj, chairman of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), with the Chief Prosecutor of the ICT. The complaint alleged that the Awami League, along with 14 other political parties, bore direct responsibility for ordering the genocide.

Regarding the matter, the Chief Prosecutor said: “We are initiating a preliminary investigation based on the complaint. Once the probe is fully underway, we will be able to assess how far the matter may proceed.”
