Jamaat seeks UN cooperation for credible election

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has sought cooperation and technical assistance from the United Nations to ensure that the upcoming national election is free, fair, and credible.

The request was made during a meeting between Jamaat amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka, Gwyn Lewis, at the party chief’s office in Bashundhara, Dhaka, on Tuesday (October 7) at 9:00 am. UN Human Rights Adviser Huma Khan was also present at the meeting.

The discussion covered Bangladesh’s current human rights and political situation, the Rohingya issue, and the forthcoming national election, among other significant topics.

Jamaat representatives said the election would mark a crucial turning point for the country’s democracy, and UN cooperation could play a vital role in ensuring a free and acceptable election in Bangladesh.

They also expressed hope for the UN’s continued support in protecting women’s rights, enhancing workplace skills, and contributing to the country’s overall development.

Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, along with Supreme Court lawyer Mir Ahmad Bin Kasem, also attended the meeting.
