Bike riding gunmen kill pro-BNP businessman in car in Chattogram

Unidentified gunmen riding on motorbikes shot dead businessman involved in BNP politics named Mohammad Abdul Hakim, 65, in Hathazari of Chattogram on Tuesday evening.

He was on his way back to Chattogram from Raozan by car when he was attacked by gunmen in the Hathazari area. Another person in the car was shot at. The name and identity of the person who was shot was not immediately known.

The incident took place in front of the main gate of the water treatment plant in Madunaghat Bazar in Dakshin Madarsha Union of Hathazari, at around 5:45 pm on Tuesday, October 7.

Confirming the death of Abdul Hakim, Chittagong District Police sources said that the police initially learned that a group of armed men on motorcycles opened fire at Abdul Hakim's car. His body is being sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

It is known that the deceased Abdul Hakim was a resident of Pachkhain village in Bagowan union of the upazila and was the owner of a cattle farm called Hamim Agro that he established in the area. He also had a herbal product and sand business.

Abdul Hakim is involved in BNP politics and was a follower of Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, the former vice chairman of the party's central committee. However, no information was available about Hakim’s party positions.

Quoting local residents, the police said that at around 5 pm on Tuesday, Abdul Hakim was traveling from his farm house in the village along with another person in a private car towards Chittagong city via Kaptai Road. He was sitting in the seat next to the driver in the car. When he reached the Madunaghat area, a group of armed men on motorcycles followed his car. At one stage, they started shooting at the car. Both the occupants of the car were shot.

Later, locals rescued the two gunshot victims and took them to a private hospital in the city, where the on-duty doctor declared Abdul Hakim dead. 

Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan told Jago News, "Police were sent to the scene after receiving the news of the shooting. I will be able to provide details when they return. After that, we will move towards legal proceedings."
