Touhid calls diplomats’ gathering at Saber’s place ‘private visit’

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain has described the recent meeting of three foreign ambassadors at the Dhaka residence of former Awami League minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury as a social visit, stating it should be viewed simply as “individuals meeting at an individual’s house.”

Responding to media queries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, Touhid Hossain dismissed concerns over the gathering, saying, “They went to a person’s house. If he were a criminal, he would certainly be in custody—but that is not the case.”

He emphasised that diplomats are free to visit private residences. “Ambassadors can go to anyone’s home,” he said. “There may be speculation about what was discussed, but as for their visit itself—we have nothing to say.”

When asked about Bangladesh’s stance on the upcoming election for the presidency of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, the Adviser affirmed that Bangladesh “will not oppose Palestine.”

On Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishra’s recent remarks regarding Bangladesh’s forthcoming national elections, Touhid Hossain iterated that such comments should not be interpreted as interference. “We understand India will work with whichever government emerges from the elections. But this is entirely an internal matter for Bangladesh.”
