Islami Andolan’s Faizul face legal notice for ‘disparaging’ Quran

A legal notice has been issued to Syed Faizul Karim, Nayeb-e-Amir of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, over remarks allegedly disparaging the Holy Quran, sparking outrage among religious communities.

The notice was sent via registered post on Thursday by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Sheikh Omar, acting on behalf of Muhammad Arifur Rahman, a reporter with Daily Al Ihsan.

Arifur confirmed the development to Jago News.

According to the notice, a video uploaded on October 6 to the YouTube channel “Charmonai Darpan” shows Faizul Karim stating, “Quran alone is nothing” and “the claim of only Quran is Shubhankarer Phanki (a sly way of dodging responsibility or truth).”

The legal document asserts that these comments undermine the sanctity of the Holy Quran and constitute a violation of religious sentiment under Section 295A of the Bangladesh Penal Code, as well as principles enshrined in the Constitution.

The notice demands that Faizul Karim publicly retract his statements and issue an unconditional apology within three days of receiving the notice. It also calls on him to pledge in writing that he will refrain from making similar remarks in the future.

Failure to comply, the notice warns, will prompt the complainant to pursue criminal and civil legal action.

The incident has ignited debate on social and religious platforms, with Islamic scholars and civil society members urging respect for the sanctity of religious texts while emphasising the importance of responsible public discourse.
