A rally organised by the Jatiya Party in front of its central office in Kakrail, Dhaka, was abruptly disrupted on Saturday afternoon (11 October) following a heavy-handed police response, party leaders and activists said.
The incident occurred shortly after 3:30 pm when police reportedly used water cannons and fired multiple sound grenades to disperse the gathering, even as party leaders were addressing the crowd. Witnesses claimed the intervention was sudden and unprovoked, effectively foiling the planned demonstration.
No injuries or casualties have been reported so far, though tensions flared at the scene as activists were forced to scatter.
The Jatiya Party has condemned the police action, calling it an unwarranted obstruction of their constitutional right to peaceful assembly
