MPO-listed teachers and staff of non-government educational institutions have announced that they will not leave Dhaka until a notification for a 20% increase in house rent allowance is issued.
To avoid public inconvenience, they also said they would move their protest from the road in front of the National Press Club to the Central Shaheed Minar.
In addition, they announced a class boycott starting Tuesday (October 12).
The announcement was made around 12:45 pm on Sunday (October 12) in front of the Press Club during the teachers’ sit-in by Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, Secretary of the MPO-listed Education Nationalization Expectant Alliance.
Delwar Hossain Azizi said, “We went to the Ministry of Finance and held discussions with officials. They could not give us any concrete assurances. We do not want to delay further. No teacher will return to any institution without our demands being met.”
He added, “We will not leave Dhaka. We will all stay here. The road in front of the Press Club is narrow. If thousands of us occupy it, it will create severe traffic congestion. To avoid public inconvenience, we will continue our sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar. Our movement will continue until the notification is issued. We will remain in Dhaka.”
At the same time, he also announced the class boycott. He said, “We are here for the students, but the government is ignoring our difficult situation. Our students support us. Therefore, from Tuesday (October 14), we will boycott classes in all MPO-listed educational institutions across the country. We will not enter classrooms until our demands are fulfilled.”
