Police dispersed teachers staging a protest in front of the National Press Club, demanding a 20% house rent allowance based on their basic salary and an increase in medical allowances. Around 1:50 pm on Sunday (October 12), police used water cannons on the teachers, and sound grenades were also fired at the scene.
After the water cannon and sound grenades caused the teachers to scatter, police launched a baton charge. However, the teachers repeatedly returned to the streets, resuming their protest and raising slogans. As of 2:15 pm, police were still trying to clear the road.
Earlier, at noon, leaders of the MPO-listed Education Nationalization Expectant Alliance announced they would move their protest from the road in front of the Press Club to the Central Shaheed Minar. Following the announcement, a section of teachers, led by teacher leaders, marched toward the Shaheed Minar.
Meanwhile, another group wished to continue protesting in front of the Press Club and simultaneously announced a long march toward the Secretariat, creating a tense situation. After the group led by teacher leaders moved toward the Shaheed Minar, police launched an operation around 1:50 pm to remove the remaining teachers still protesting in front of the Press Club.
