Home Ministry declares a Dhaka Cantt building ‘temporary prison’

The government has temporarily designated a building within Dhaka Cantonment as a prison.

Although the official notification was issued on Sunday, October 12, the Prisons-1 wing of the Home Ministry formally announced the decision on Monday, October 13.

The order was signed by Md Hafiz Al Asad, Deputy Secretary of the Security Services Division at the Home Ministry, acting on the President’s directives.

Citing Section 541(1) of the Bangladesh Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, and Section 3(B) of The Prisons Act, 1894 (IX of 1894), the notification declares ‘MES’ Building 54 situated on the north side of Bashar Road in Dhaka Cantonment as a temporary prison.

The order states that it has been issued with the approval of the competent authority and takes immediate effect. However, it does not specify the exact purpose for which the building will be used as a temporary detention facility.
