The Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel, titled Sampritir Shikkharthi Jote, has secured a landslide victory in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) elections, winning 24 out of 26 posts, including vice-president (VP) and general secretary (GS).
Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Monir Uddin announced the results in the early hours of Thursday (October 16). He said the polls were held in a peaceful and competitive atmosphere, with active participation from both candidates and voters, turning the campus into a festive ground.
From the Shibir-backed panel, Md Ibrahim Hossain Roni was elected vice-president and Sayed Bin Habib general secretary. This victory marks the return of Islami Chhatra Shibir to CUCSU leadership after 44 years.
Outside the panel, Ayubur Rahman Tawfiq of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal-backed student alliance won the post of assistant general secretary (AGS), while independent candidate Tamanna Mahbub Preeti was elected assistant sports secretary.
Roni, a student of the History Department (2017–18 session), received 7,983 votes for the VP post, defeating his nearest rival, JCD’s Sajjad Hossain Hridoy, who secured 4,374 votes. Sayed, from the History Department (2019–20 session), won the GS post with 8,031 votes, while JCD’s Md Shafayat polled 2,734.
Other winners from the Shibir-backed panel include Mohammad Shawon as sports secretary, Hares Matabber as literature, culture and publications secretary, Jihad Ahnaf as assistant literature, culture and publications secretary, Abdullah Al Noman as office secretary, and Jannatul Adan Nusrat as assistant office secretary.
The panel also secured several other posts: Tahsina Rahman as social welfare and environment secretary, Tanvir Anjum Shovon as research and innovation secretary, Mahbubur Rahman as science and ICT secretary, Nahima Akter Deepa as female student welfare secretary, and Jannatul Ferdous Rita as assistant female student welfare secretary.
In addition, Afnan Hasan Imra was elected health secretary, Monayem Sharif liberation war and democratic movement secretary, Mehedi Hasan Sohan career development and international affairs secretary, Ishak Bhuiyan communication and accommodation secretary, Obaidul Salman assistant communication and accommodation secretary, Fazle Rabbi Tawhid law and human rights secretary, and Masum Billah library and cafeteria secretary.
