Possessing advisers’ call records illegal, blackmail: Rizvi

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has questioned a senior Islamist party leader’s claim of possessing call records of government advisers and threatening to leak them, denouncing the act as illegal and a form of political blackmail.

Speaking to reporters in Dhaka on Thursday while seeking medical assistance for Hunaifa, a critically ill child from Kamrangirchar, on behalf of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Rizvi condemned the roel of the Islamist party leader calling it as both illegal and unethical.

“If an individual—especially a political figure—possesses the private call records of advisers of interim govenrmnt and threatens to leak them, this constitutes not just a breach of privacy but political blackmail,” Rizvi asserted. “The public rightly questions: how did such sensitive data fall into private hands? This raises grave concerns about surveillance, data security, and the weaponisation of personal information for political gain.”

“We are in a critical transitional phase,” he said. “Our promise after the fall of the fascist regime was to build a humane Bangladesh—where no child is denied treatment, and no citizen lives in fear.”

He lamented what he described as unnecessary controversies surrounding the charter, particularly debates over the proposed referendum and the proliferation of “notes of dissent.” “When the nation expects unity, these manufactured disputes only confuse and disappoint the people,” Rizvi said. “Delays and divisions on minor issues risk playing into the hands of anti-democratic forces who benefit from chaos.”

Rizvi urged all political parties to rise above partisan interests and endorse the charter in the spirit of national reconciliation. “If obstacles are placed on the path to democracy, it is the fascists—not the people—who will gain,” he warned.

The event was attended by senior BNP leaders, including Family Convener Atiqur Rahman Rumon, Party Treasurer Rasheduzzaman Millat, Advisor Ashraf Uddin Bakul, and Chhatra Dal Vice-President Touhidur Rahman Awal.

Earlier, Rizvi announced that Tarique Rahman had approved immediate financial and logistical support for Hunaifa’s treatment, reaffirming the party’s commitment to social welfare amid political struggle.
