Lutfey meets Gor at White House, talks on trade, regional cooperation

In a significant step towards strengthening economic and diplomatic ties, Chief Adviser’s Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi held a high-level meeting on Wednesday with Sergio Gor, the newly confirmed US Ambassador to India and former US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, at the West Wing of the White House.

The discussions focused on expanding trade and investment cooperation, advancing economic and governance reforms, and enhancing labour market development—key pillars of Bangladesh’s ongoing transition towards a more transparent and investor-friendly economy.

Both envoys also exchanged views on regional stability, electoral integrity and the growing threat of disinformation, underscoring the importance of maintaining open and direct channels of communication between stakeholders in South Asia and the United States.

Special Envoy Siddiqi expressed gratitude for the warm reception and described the talks as “productive and wide-ranging.” He welcomed Ambassador Gor’s recent public remarks praising Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to deepening bilateral and regional partnerships anchored in democratic values and inclusive growth.

In a gesture to further strengthen ties, Lutfey extended a formal invitation to Ambassador Gor to visit Dhaka in the near future—a move expected to catalyse follow-up engagements on trade facilitation, private sector development and sustainable investment.

Wednesday’s meeting builds on a prior dialogue between Ambassador Gor and Chief Adviser Yunus during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York last month, signalling sustained high-level US–Bangladesh engagement amid a pivotal period of economic and institutional reform in Dhaka.

Analysts view the outreach as part of Bangladesh’s broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment, diversify export markets and position itself as a reliable partner in Indo-Pacific economic architecture.
