MPO-listed teachers have postponed their ‘March to Jamuna’ programme, and also threatened to begin fast-unto-death at the Jatiya Shaheed Minar in Dhaka if their demands are not met.
Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO-affiliated Education Nationalisation Alliance, made the announcement around 5:30pm on Thursday, October 16.
"We have sat with the education adviser but nothing positive came. We have postponed the March to Jamuna programme for various reasons. However, we will now stay at the Shaheed Minar," he said.
"If our demands are not met, we will go on fast-unto-death," he added.
Earlier, the protesting teachers had warned to observe their planned March towards the State Guest House Jamuna at 12:00pm today if the government does not meet their demands.
Teachers from non-government educational institutions under MPO (Monthly Pay Order) scheme across the country have been demonstrating for the last couple of days, pressing for their three-point demand, and in protest against attacks on their programmes by police recently.
The demands are a 20 per cent increase in house rent allowance (minimum Tk 3,000) based on basic salary, Tk 1,500 as medical allowance for both teachers and staff, and 75 per cent of the basic salary as festival allowance for staff.
