Two confess to Jobayed’s murder: Police

Two people have preliminarily confessed to the murder of Jobayed Hossain, a student of Jagannath University (JnU) and a member of the Chhatra Dal convening committee. Police said the murder had been planned a month in advance, based on information obtained during questioning of the accused.

Bangshal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rafiqul Islam stated that the female student and Mahir Rahman confirmed the murder plan during interrogation.

According to the OC, the female student had been in a romantic relationship with Mahir for nine years. She later developed feelings for her tutor, Jobayed, and directly informed her former boyfriend about this. Recently, she reportedly lost interest in Jobayed. Following this, on September 25, she and Mahir allegedly conspired to kill him.

The OC added that in mid-September, the student told Mahir she no longer liked Jobayed, after which they planned the murder. On September 25, the two allegedly purchased switchblades to carry out the plan, intending to attack Jobayed from two directions.

Following their plan, on Sunday (October 19), Mahir stabbed Jobayed near Roushan Villa under Nurbox Road in Armanitola while Jobayed was on his way to a tuition session. His friend Fardin Ahmed Aylan was reportedly with him. The female student reportedly assisted by providing information about Jobayed’s whereabouts and other details.

On the day of the incident, around 4:30 pm, Jobayed, a 2019–20 Statistics Department student, had gone to tutor the second-year female student of Dhaka Metropolitan Women’s College at her house. As he entered the house and started climbing the stairs, Mahir stabbed him on the right side of his neck with a switchblade, causing fatal bleeding.

The female student was taken into police custody the same night. The following day, main accused Mahir Rahman and his accomplice Fardin Ahmed Aylan were also arrested.
