Jagannath University (JnU) student and member of the Chhatra Dal convening committee, Jobayed Hossain, fell victim to a love triangle, said Additional Police Commissioner of the DMP, Md Nazrul Islam, at a press conference where he disclosed details of the murder.
He added that Jobayed’s murder bore similarities to the case of Minni from Barguna and emphasised that this was purely a love triangle case with no political motive. “We did not find any political angle in this matter. They started planning the murder on September 25 and killed Jobayed on October 19,” he said.
According to the DMP officer, Jobayed was stabbed to death around 4:30 pm on Sunday (October 19) on the staircase of Roushan Villa on Nur Box Lane in Ward 31 under Banshal Police Station.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mahir Rahman and the female student had known each other for nine years, but their romantic relationship lasted about one and a half to two years. Jobayed had been tutoring the girl for almost a year, during which their relationship developed. The girl reportedly maintained relationships with both of them. Learning this, Mahir became enraged and began arguing with her. At one point, she allegedly instigated Mahir to kill Jobayed, reportedly saying, “If you can’t get rid of Jobayed, you can’t be mine.”
The two repeatedly planned the murder, and Mahir involved his friend, Fardeen Ahmed Aylan. They purchased a switch-gear knife for Tk 500 from the Boubazar area in South Keraniganj.
On the day of the murder, during a tuition session, Jobayed arrived at Roushan Villa, where Mahir and Aylan were lying in wait at the bottom of the staircase. Mahir questioned Jobayed about his relationship with the girl, leading to an argument. Mahir then took the switch-gear knife from his bag and stabbed Jobayed on the right side of his neck, killing him on the spot. The female student was reportedly standing on the third floor during the incident.
Mahir Rahman, 19, Fardeen Ahmed Aylan, 20, and the female student have been arrested.
On Tuesday (October 21) morning, Jobayed’s brother, Enayet Hossain Soikat, filed a case at Banshal Police Station.
