The authorities of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have temporarily suspended a student over allegations of sexual harassment and rape.
The student has been identified as Shanto Roy, a third-year student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department.
The university administration made the decision after a group of students staged a demonstration at around 12:30am on Wednesday, demanding the arrest of Shanto Roy. The suspension was announced in a notice issued by the Directorate of Students’ Welfare.
Professor AKM Masud, Director of Students’ Welfare, said the university authorities would hold a meeting with the vice-chancellor on Wednesday (October 22) to make a final decision regarding the accused student. He also mentioned that the administration plans to file a case against him.
Earlier, students of the university’s Ahsanullah Hall staged a protest demanding Shanto’s arrest after allegations surfaced on social media platform Reddit, claiming that he had made derogatory remarks about Muslim women and committed rape. Later, police arrived on the campus, and the situation was brought under control.
