Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has announced that the number of SIM cards registered in an individual’s name will be reduced ahead of the national elections. According to him, a person will be allowed to have a maximum of seven SIM cards.
He made the remarks on Sunday (26 October) afternoon following the 15th meeting of the Law-and-Order Advisory Committee.
The Home Affairs Adviser explained that SIM cards registered in one person’s name are often misused by others to commit crimes, making it difficult to identify the real perpetrators. To address this issue, the number of SIM cards registered per individual will be limited. He noted that after incidents occur, it is often discovered that the SIM card involved does not belong to the person using it. The reduction will be implemented before the elections.
He said, “We are trying to ensure that, before the national elections, an individual can register a maximum of seven SIM cards using their NID.”
The briefing was attended by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, Police Inspector General (IGP) Baharul Alam, Director General of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and Major General Abdul Motaleb Sajjad Mahmud.
