Metro rail services were suspended after a pedestrian was killed when a bearing pad fell from a metro rail pillar in Farmgate, Dhaka.
Abul Kalam, a resident of Naria in Shariatpur, died in the incident on Sunday (26 October) around 12:30 pm. Since then, metro rail services have been suspended along the entire route from Uttara to Motijheel, and it is not yet clear when they will resume.
When asked about the incident, Tejgaon Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mobarak Hossain told Jago News that a bearing pad had come loose and fallen, killing Abul Kalam on the spot. Police are present at the site.
A similar incident occurred last year in September in the Farmgate area, when a bearing pad fell and caused metro rail services to be suspended for nearly 14 hours. Today, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has not been able to confirm exactly when services will resume.
According to DMTCL sources, rubber bearing pads are installed between the elevated pillars and the metro rail tracks. Each pad weighs approximately 140–150 kg. Trains cannot operate safely without these bearing pads, as the elevated tracks may shift or become unstable. For this reason, metro rail services have been suspended.
