Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Ershad Ullah, contesting from the Chattogram-8 constituency, was shot during a mass rally on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred amid a large public gathering in the city, sending shockwaves through the political community. Ershad Ullah was immediately rushed to Evercare Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. His condition has not yet been officially disclosed.
Jasim Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Bayezid Bostami Police Station, confirmed the shooting and said an investigation is underway. “We are looking into the matter and gathering evidence from the scene,” he stated.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over political violence and security for candidates as the election period intensifies.
Political tensions in Chattogram have been escalating in recent weeks, with rival parties holding competing rallies across the port city. BNP leaders have condemned the attack and called for an immediate and impartial inquiry.
