The upazila election office in Gopalpur of Tangail was attacked and vandalised on Monday morning, November 10, leaving three election officials injured and critical documents damaged.
According to election authorities, a group of approximately 30-40 individuals, identified as members and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliates, arrived at the office shortly after 10:00 am.
Witnesses reported that the group confronted the Upazila Election Officer, Mohammad Nazrul Islam, leading to a physical altercation. Two other staff members – data entry operator Amjad Hossain and scanning operator Sumon – were also assaulted during the incident.
The attackers reportedly damaged office property, tore official documents, and disrupted ongoing electoral procedures. The violence prompted an immediate response from local law enforcement.
Assistant Upazila Election Officer Abu Raihan confirmed the injuries and stated, “Three of our colleagues were physically harmed. We had recently denied certain requests for document processing, which may have triggered this reaction.”
Senior District Election Officer Mohammad Tajul Islam, who arrived at the scene, confirmed that a formal case is being filed under relevant sections of the Penal Code for vandalism of a government office and assault on public officials.
“This is a serious breach of protocol. We are coordinating with police to ensure accountability,” he said.
In response, Upazila BNP General Secretary Kazi Liaquat contested the official account, alleging misconduct by the election officer. “We went to the office not to attack, but to raise grievances. Multiple complaints have been filed against the officer for irregularities, favouritism, and misuse of authority. Instead of addressing them, he reportedly insulted those who came to seek redress.”
Tangail Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman confirmed that officers had inspected the scene and verified the damage to government property. “If there are legitimate complaints against any official, the proper channel is a written petition or formal complaint to the Election Commission. Violence and destruction of public property are unacceptable and will be dealt with under the law.”
No arrests have been made as of press time, but investigations are ongoing.
The Election Commission has been formally notified, and an internal review of the incident is expected to be initiated.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of election personnel and the integrity of the electoral process in the lead-up to upcoming polls.
