Government primary school assistant teachers have suspended all ongoing protest activities following a breakthrough agreement with the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
On Monday, November 10, teacher leaders met with Finance Secretary Md Khairuzzaman Majumder and Primary and Mass Education Secretary Abu Taher Md Masud Rana at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Following the discussions, they announced the immediate withdrawal of all demonstration programs, including strikes and rallies, effective from Tuesday.
Khairun Nahar Lipi, Convener of the Primary Teachers Demand Implementation Council, confirmed the decision to reporters. “Our longstanding demand was for placement in the 10th pay grade,” she said. “However, the Finance Ministry has now issued a formal press release assuring the implementation of the 11th pay grade for us. In good faith, and trusting this commitment, we have decided to call off all protest activities with immediate effect.”
The move marks a significant resolution to months of industrial action by tens of thousands of primary school teachers, who had been demanding equitable pay scales aligned with their qualifications and responsibilities.
While some teachers expressed cautious optimism, others called for written confirmation and a clear implementation timeline. The government has not yet released detailed guidelines, but officials indicated that the necessary administrative orders would be issued in the coming days.
The withdrawal of protests is expected to restore normalcy in schools across the country ahead of the final term of the academic year.
