BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that Bangladesh risks becoming a failed state if the upcoming national elections are deferred.
He made the remarks while addressing a rally at Laxmirhat High School ground in Kishmat Keshur Bari, Baragaon Union 4 in Thakurgaon Sadar, on Tuesday, October 11.
Mirza Fakhrul cautioned that the government would have to bear full responsibility if it attempts to impose anything beyond the agreed framework of political and electoral reforms.
He also alleged that a certain group has been going door to door, misleading women by spreading distorted interpretations of religion. “We must remain vigilant against those who act with hypocrisy,” he said.
Reiterating his warning, the BNP leader said, “If the elections are postponed this time, Bangladesh will become a failed state.”
Outlining his party’s vision, Fakhrul pledged that if the BNP returns to power, it would create employment opportunities for one crore (10 million) jobless people within 15 months and ensure a completely independent judiciary.
On education reforms, he criticised the exclusion of physical education and music teachers from schools, saying it has created “a kind of incompleteness” in the education system.
Concluding his speech, Fakhrul paid tribute to the late President Ziaur Rahman, calling him “a shining name in Bangladesh’s political history” and adding that “Shaheed Zia introduced a new philosophy in politics, one that remains relevant even today.”
The rally was chaired by Baragaon Union BNP President Dr Ahmed Ali. District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Md Paigam Ali, Sadar Upazila BNP President Abdul Hamid and other district and upazila-level leaders were also present.
