The Interim Government has described the death sentences handed down to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan for crimes against humanity as a “historic verdict,” urging citizens across the country to remain calm and responsible in the aftermath.
In an official statement issued on Monday, the government called on people from all sections of society to exercise restraint and avoid any form of disorder, provocation, violence or unlawful activity following the tribunal’s ruling.
Acknowledging that the long-awaited verdict may stir strong emotions – particularly among the families of those killed during the July Uprising – the government cautioned against any actions that could disrupt public order.
“No one should take steps that may endanger peace or stability on the basis of emotional reactions,” the statement said.
The Interim Government also warned that any attempts to incite chaos, create unrest or undermine law and order would be met with firm action. “Any form of anarchy, disorder or effort to break public order will be strictly suppressed,” it added.
