At least six students were injured after jumping from the roof of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall at Dhaka University (DU) in panic following an earthquake on Friday morning.
The injured students include hall union VP Sadiq Hossain, Abdullah Al Tanvir of the Economics Department, Anzir Hossain of the Journalism Department, and Zulfikar Ali. The names of the other two students could not be confirmed immediately.
Sources said that a few seconds after the tremor was felt, several students jumped from the roof and windows of the hall in fear, resulting in injuries. One student sustained serious injuries, while five others were also hurt. The injured were quickly rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The earthquake shook the capital, Dhaka, along with several other parts of the country at 10:38 am. Rubaiyat Kabir, acting officer at the Earthquake Monitoring Centre of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, told Jago News that the earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, about 13 kilometers from Dhaka, and the earthquake was of moderate intensity.
