3.6 magnitude earthquake jolts parts of Assam and Sylhet

A mild earthquake measuring 3.6 magnitude on the Richter scale was felt across parts of Karimganj, Assam, Tripura, and Hailakandi in India, as well as Moulvibazar and Sylhet in Bangladesh on Sunday evening.

According to preliminary seismic data, the tremor struck at 5:28 p.m. (Indian Standard Time) on November 23.

The epicenter was recorded in Hailakandi, Assam, at coordinates 24.34°N and 92.47°E, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, making it more noticeable despite its moderate magnitude.

Residents in the affected areas reported light shaking lasting a few seconds. No casualties, damage, or disruptions were immediately reported from either side of the border.

Seismologists say quakes of this scale are common in the region, which lies within an active seismic zone influenced by the collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and experts advise residents to remain cautious in the event of mild aftershocks, though no significant risk is currently anticipated.

Further updates will follow if new information becomes available.
