Ordinance promulgated to establish Police Commission

The government has promulgated an ordinance to form a five-member Police Commission, which will be headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court.

The decision was approved on Thursday at a meeting of the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, at the council headquarters in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

Later in the afternoon, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser for Forests, Environment and Climate Change, formally announced the ordinance’s passage at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road.

Although the government has not yet released details about the commission’s specific functions, appointment procedures, or scope of authority, the initiative is being seen as a significant step toward enhancing police accountability, strengthening institutional oversight, and restoring public trust in law enforcement under the interim administration.
