A Bangladeshi youth, identified as Sukiram, 25, was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Murichhara border in Karmadha union of Kulaura in Moulvibazar on Thursday, December 4.
The incident occurred in the Dashteki area, where Sukiram and several others were grazing cattle near the border as usual.
According to locals and police, he entered Indian territory near the 199 Hirachhara BSF camp while trying to retrieve the cattle, prompting BSF personnel to open fire.
A bullet struck him in the back, leaving him critically injured.
Hearing his screams, locals rushed to his aid and took him to the Kulaura Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Dr Sharmin Farhana Jerin, Resident Medical Officer of the health complex, confirmed the death, saying, “He died before being brought to the hospital. There are bullet injuries on his back.”
Kulaura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Omar Faruk said, “Initial evidence suggests he died from gunshot wounds. The body has been sent to Moulvibazar District Hospital for autopsy. Necessary legal procedures are underway.”
Lieutenant Colonel ASM Zakaria, commander of BGB’s 46 Battalion in Srimangal, stated, “We have received information about the incident. It appears the youth may have been shot after crossing the zero line. Efforts are underway to gather detailed information.”
