Khaleda’s departure for London hinges on ‘safe to fly’ clearance

BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s planned transfer to London for advanced medical care now rests entirely on the final assessment of the medical board overseeing her treatment.

Her personal physician and BNP Standing Committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Saturday that she will be flown out as soon as the board certifies she is “safe to fly.”

Speaking to reporters outside Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, Dr Zahid said all preparations for the journey are ready. “Security and treatment are our top priorities. She will be taken abroad only after the medical board gives full clearance,” he said.

He added that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman, currently in London, are closely monitoring Khaleda Zia’s condition. “The party considers the doctors’ decision as the final authority,” Dr. Zahid noted.

Praising the dedication of the medical board that has been treating Khaleda Zia for the past six years, he said the team has been working “with firmness and professionalism” to ensure her care.

Dr. Zahid also expressed concern over rumours circulating on social media regarding her health. “I don’t have time to see everything, but I urge everyone not to spread rumours or confusion. Pray for her recovery,” he said.

Regarding her potential foreign travel, he confirmed that all documents, medical logistics and necessary arrangements have already been completed. He added that both the Qatar government and the interim government are extending full cooperation.

The medical board, he said, remains hopeful. “She was in a more serious condition before and, by Allah’s grace, she recovered. This time too, we are optimistic she will recover quickly, InshaAllah.”
