EC yet to decide on polls schedule announcement

Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has said that although preparations for holding the national election are in full swing, no decision has yet been made regarding the announcement of the polls schedule.

He made the remark while speaking at a workshop with journalists at the Election Training Institute in Agargaon on Saturday (6 December).

On 29 November, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin had said that the schedule for the national election was likely to be announced in the second week of December. Three days earlier, on 26 November, the CEC had said that the Election Commission would take all necessary measures to ensure a fair 13th national election, and that action would be taken against those announcing plans to resist the polls.

The parliamentary election and the referendum will be held on the same day. As part of the preparations, the Commission held a national-level meeting at the EC headquarters in Agargaon on Saturday.

Later, speaking to reporters, Akhtar Ahmed said, “We were in a meeting from around 11:30am regarding the preparations for the election.”

Regarding the polls schedule, the EC senior secretary said the Commission had not yet fixed a date for announcing it. However, he stated that the EC is fully prepared to conduct the election.

Urging all to refrain from spreading misinformation about the polls, Akhtar Ahmed said, “I request everyone to provide accurate information. Certainly, robust preparations for the election are underway.”
