810 tonnes onion imports thru Sonamasjid port get govt nod

The government has approved the import of 810 tonnes of onions through the Sonamasjid land port in Chapainawabganj.

Somir Chandra Ghosh, Deputy Director of the Sonamasjid Plant Quarantine Center, confirmed the approval on Monday, December 8.

The import covers 27 permits, with the process already underway and 180 tonnes were imported on Monday alone.

Earlier, on Sunday evening, two trucks carrying 60 tonnes of onions arrived from Mohdipur, India, prompting retail prices to drop by Tk 20-30 per kilogram, now selling at Tk 100 per kg.

The last shipment from India through the port took place on September 9, Somir Chandra Ghosh added.
