Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed on Thursday inaugurated the long-awaited Supreme Court Secretariat, a historic step towards strengthening the independence of the judiciary.
The ceremony took place at around 3:20 pm in Administrative Building-4 of the Supreme Court.
Present at the event were Registrar General Md Habibur Rahman Siddiqui and other senior registrars and officials.
The Secretariat was established following the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, issued on November 30 on the President's instructions by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
The ordinance received final approval from the Interim Government's Advisory Council on November 20.
The move fulfils a proposal submitted by the Chief Justice on October 27 last year, which included a draft ordinance, organogram, and reforms to align with Article 109 of the Constitution, granting the High Court Division supervision over subordinate courts.
In a statement, the Supreme Court administration described the development as the realisation of a cherished dream for judicial independence, made possible through the interim government's cooperation.
The new Secretariat will handle administrative control over lower courts, separating the judiciary fully from executive influence.
