Anis Alamgir placed on 5-day remand

A Dhaka court on Monday placed journalist Anis Alamgir on a five-day remand in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the capital’s Uttara West Police Station.

The order was passed by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on December 15.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Inspector Md Moniruzzaman of Uttara West Police Station, had sought a seven-day remand for the journalist.

Anis Alamgir was taken to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) office for questioning on Sunday night.

He later confirmed to the media over the phone around 8:30 pm that he was at the DB office.

He said he was picked up from a gym in the Dhanmondi area around 7:30 pm on Sunday and taken to the DB office, where he was told that the DB chief would speak to him.

Speaking to reporters around 3:40 pm on Monday, DMP Detective Branch chief Md. Shafiqul Islam said Anis Alamgir had been arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

He added that a total of five people, including Anis Alamgir, have been named as accused in the case.
