The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday took cognisance of charges against former Major General Ziaul Ahsan in a crime against humanity case involving alleged enforced disappearances, torture and extrajudicial killings during the prolonged rule of the now-banned Awami League.
After accepting the prosecution’s case, the tribunal fixed December 21 for a hearing on the formal framing of charges.
Prosecutors told the tribunal that evidence suggests Ziaul Ahsan was directly involved in the extrajudicial killing of at least 100 people. Investigations are also continuing into allegations related to the killing of a further 400 individuals.
The case is among several high-profile proceedings currently examining alleged human rights violations committed during the tenure of the previous government.
