At least eight people were killed and 27 wounded after Russian ballistic missile and drone strikes hit critical port infrastructure in Ukraine’s Odesa region late Friday, Ukrainian officials said.
The attack damaged logistics facilities, trapping some wounded on a bus as trucks caught fire.
Moscow struck Odesa again on Saturday, hitting reservoirs in what Ukraine described as deliberate targeting of civilian logistics routes. The bombardment is part of a sustained Russian campaign against civilian infrastructure, leaving over two million people without electricity, water, and heating amid freezing winter conditions.
The escalation comes as US-led peace talks continue in Miami. Russian forces claimed to have seized villages in Donetsk and Sumy regions, while Ukraine responded by targeting Russian military and energy assets, including the Filanovsky oil rig in the Caspian Sea and patrol ships. Ukrainian forces also struck a Russian submarine at Novorossiysk Naval Base earlier this week.
Territorial concessions remain a key sticking point, with Russia demanding Ukraine cede all territory in four occupied regions and Crimea. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to reclaim ground, including the northern city of Kupiansk, challenging Russian claims of total control.
European leaders have agreed to a €90 billion ($105bn) support package for Ukraine, which will cover military and reconstruction needs depending on the course of the war.
