Fire erupts in Babubazar high-rise; 17 rescued

A fire broke out in a 14-storey building in the Armanitola area of Babubazar, Dhaka, on Tuesday morning, prompting a swift rescue operation that safely evacuated 17 people. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Kazi Nazmuzzaman, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the blaze began at 6:40 AM on the sixth floor, a space reportedly used for bag storage. Within minutes, nine fire units rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control by 7:40 AM. It was fully extinguished by 8:10 AM.

The building houses both commercial and residential spaces, with offices, including banks, on the lower seven floors and residences above.

“Upon arrival, one team focused on fighting the fire while another evacuated residents via the rear staircase,” Nazmuzzaman said. “Thanks to the rapid response, the fire was contained to the sixth floor and did not spread.”

Firefighters conducted floor-by-floor checks, confirming that no one was trapped.

Regarding the cause, he said, “A special investigation committee will be formed to determine the exact cause and assess the damage.”
