Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday avoided speaking to reporters amid widespread speculation about his resignation.
Despite journalists waiting for a considerable time and repeatedly seeking his comments, the adviser did not respond and left without addressing the media.
The incident occurred at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon around 4:20pm.
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission held a view-sharing meeting with deputy commissioners (DCs), superintendents of police (SPs), divisional commissioners and regional election officers to discuss law and order ahead of the upcoming national elections. The meeting was chaired by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed and attended by Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, other election commissioners, EC officials, senior field administration and police officials, the inspector general of police (IGP) and the cabinet secretary.
During the meeting, police superintendents raised several demands aimed at ensuring a fair and peaceful election. Alongside calls to increase the number of magistrates in the field during the parliamentary polls, SPs also sought limited magistracy powers for police officers.
They said law enforcement agencies are continuing drives to recover illegal weapons but face shortages of manpower and transportation. The SPs noted that holding two elections on the same day would pose a major challenge and stressed the need for additional resources. They also suggested deploying Red Crescent Society volunteers to assist sick and disabled voters on election day, with police support.
After the meeting, the CEC and other senior officials briefed the media.
However, the Home Affairs Adviser – whose ministry is primarily responsible for maintaining law and order – did not speak to reporters, further fuelling speculation surrounding his position.
