Bangladesh leads global green push with 38 new LEED-certified RMG factories

Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) industry has achieved a historic milestone in sustainable manufacturing, securing a record 38 new LEED certifications in 2025 – the highest number in any single year.

This accomplishment further entrenches the country's position as the global leader in eco-friendly apparel production, with a total of 270 LEED-certified garment factories, according to data released by industry sources on 24 December 2025.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), is the world's most widely recognised green building rating system. It evaluates facilities on criteria including energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainable materials, and indoor environmental quality, with ratings ranging from Certified to Platinum.

Of the 38 newly certified factories in 2025, 22 attained the top-tier Platinum rating, 11 achieved Gold, and 5 earned Silver – underscoring a focus on high-standard sustainability rather than mere compliance.

The current breakdown of Bangladesh's 270 green factories stands at 114 Platinum, 137 Gold, 15 Silver, and 4 Certified.

Over 550 additional factories are reportedly in the pipeline for certification.

This year's record surpasses previous annual highs, reflecting sustained investment amid growing international demand for low-carbon production.

Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and managing director of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange, highlighted the strategic importance of these advancements.

"Bangladesh has consistently led the world in green factories, thanks to long-term commitments from manufacturers and proactive guidance from BGMEA," he said. "With buyers and regulators – particularly in the EU – prioritising reduced emissions, water stewardship, and energy efficiency, our sector is ramping up investments in climate-resilient infrastructure."

He added that LEED certification now serves as a key competitive edge in global markets, preparing the industry for forthcoming regulations on carbon pricing and digital transparency.

This 2025 record reinforces Bangladesh's dominance not only as a major apparel exporter but as a pioneer in future-proof, environmentally responsible industrialisation.
