Tarique Rahman ends exile, returns home

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returned home on Thursday after ending more than 17 years in exile in London, United Kingdom.

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying Tarique Rahman, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, and daughter Zaima Rahman landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 11:40 am. Earlier, another Biman Airlines flight carrying the BNP leader and his family members had touched down at Sylhet Osmani International Airport in Sylhet at 9:57 am.

Upon his arrival, members of the BNP Standing Committee extended a warm reception to him at Shahjalal Airport.

Later, he will proceed to Evercare Hospital to visit his ailing mother and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. A brief public event will also be arranged at July 36 Expressway (300 Feet Road), where the BNP acting chairman will express his gratitude to the people on his way to the hospital.

Tarique had left Bangladesh in 2008 for medical treatment after being released from jail during the military-backed caretaker government period and later settled in the UK with his family. During his exile, he faced numerous legal hurdles but was recently cleared of all cases.
